Have you ever had this happen...

Life is going quite smoothly and then someone comes along and suggests a radical idea that threatens to take you out of your comfort zone. It might be a new direction in your study or career, a move to a new location, a marriage proposal or a journey to a place you've never been.

The mere suggestion can challenge you to get off the couch and press play on a new adventure.

Sooner or later that challenge will come to each one of us in respect to the spiritual side of our life; the challenge to take a journey towards God and respond to his invitation to fully embrace the kind of life he created us to live.

This page has been designed to give practical assistance to those interested in taking that journey of discovery.

The Journey

We are all on a spiritual journey. Often our awareness of this comes when we first think to ourselves, 'there's got to be more to life than this.'

In the Bible we read that God is drawing all people to himself. From the moment we take our first breath, he begins this process, whether we are aware of it or not. And he keeps seeking a personal relationship with us right up until our dying breath.

In Acts 17:24-27 we read, The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all people life and breath and everything else.

From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

One of the most significant decisions you face in life is whether or not you are going to actively journey towards God as he reaches out to you.

This journey may not result in you embracing the Christian faith but, at the very least, it will enable you to make an informed decision about your response to God.

Like all journeys this one is a great, and sometimes demanding, adventure - an opportunity to take in new experiences and deal with fresh challenges. In the process you will learn more about God and more about yourself.

It's reassuring to know that God promises to reward those who will dare to actively pursue him.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8)

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:13-14)

Documentation

Many long journeys require a passport or visa but on this one, no documentation is required! This spiritual journey is open to all who are willing to take it. God does not require us to meet any particular criteria before we can get to know him.

Journey Advisors

When planning a trip to a new town, city or country, it pays to find someone who has already been there. They can answer your questions, advise you on what you can expect, what you must see, and what is best to avoid.

In the same way, as you begin your spiritual journey, those who have already embraced faith in God, are your most helpful resource. It is likely that you have taken the step you have because someone has encouraged you to. That person may be able to continue to guide you in your journey towards God or refer you to someone who can.

Howick Community Church also has a number of people who are able to serve you as you explore the Christian faith. If you would like to know more about the Christian faith you can call the church office and ask to speak to someone about any questions you may have, or alternately you can come along to our services which are held on Sunday at 10am at the Picton Centre, 120 Picton Street Howick.
