Jesus’ vision for the Church is clearly articulated in the New Testament, emphasizing discipleship, unity, and mission.
Here at Howick Community Church, we want to be a commissioned church.
In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus commissions His followers to:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” This directive underscores the Church's role in evangelism and spiritual formation, focusing on making disciples rather than merely converts. As John Comer said: We want to live out a three-pronged goal as disciples – a. Be with Christ b. Become like Christ c. Do as He did.
We also want to be missional church. The concept of Missio Dei emphasizes that the Church exists to participate in God's mission. Missio Dei is a Latin term meaning "Mission of God". This involves being sent into the world to proclaim the gospel and live out the teachings of Jesus in diverse cultural contexts.
Jesus envisioned the Church as a community where all individuals, regardless of background, are welcomed and transformed by the gospel. This vision continues to inspire efforts towards greater inclusivity and transformation within the Church today.
We want to be known for our love for each other (John 13:34-35). Our intentional focus is to create a thriving, Christ-centred community where individuals are welcomed, supported, and empowered to use their time, talents, treasure, and tenderness to serve God and others. Through hospitality, pastoral care, community engagement, and the stewardship of our God-given gifts, we seek to build a stronger, more compassionate congregation that impacts lives within and beyond the church walls. This mission is not just a plan, but a shared commitment that binds us together.
In summary, Jesus' vision for the Church encompasses making disciples (not just converts), fostering a resilient and united community, engaging in God's mission, and creating an environment where individuals are transformed by the gospel. We want to be the church who understands this vision and live it out!
